St John’s boatyard

IMG_4857 The boat is on the hard being repaired at the St Johns Boatyard in Jacksonville, FL.  The boat will remain there and the different specialists will come and do the repairs.  Basically the hole will be fixed as well as all the gouges and gelcoat damage on the starboard side of the boat.  Some highlights of the list of what needs to be replaced include: a new engine, water pump, inverter, water maker, fuel transfer pump, battery bank, electrical panel, basically every single electric thing that was in the starboard compartment as well as all new wires run the entire length of the boat if any part of them is in the starboard compartment and  new woodwork, replacing mattresses and all of our personal stuff.   The insurance appraiser already has over 100,000 worth of damage tabulated, with the expectation that more might be found as things are removed and examined.  They say it should take 90-120 days to do those repairs.

I have had several people ask about who is responsible for the I-Beam in the channel?  Basically the DOT is in charge of bridges and they subcontracted the job to repair the bridge.  The insurance company tells me that they will be going to the DOT to reimburse them and whatever percentage they get we will get the same applied to our $5,000 deductible.  Its nice to know that isn’t a battle we have to fight.

There are a lot of very big boats also getting work done on them. This blue boat is being extended 10 feet.  Basically they cut it in half and added 10 feet to the middle. I’m not sure why the owner didn’t just buy a bigger boat, but to each his own…

They started working on the hole right away. Here is what is looks like being patched.

The starboard engine was removed. There is a special hatch just above the bed especially for that, so basically they were able to lift it straight out of the boat, and are ordering a new one.

We are really happy with the boatyard. So far we have met very conscientious, knowledgable workers who seem to be doing the job right, not taking shortcuts. The owners of the yard keep us posted and we have made several trips up to the boat to check on its progress. The office has two single bathrooms, one for men, one for women. This sign is on the women’s bathroom door:

Like I said, we are very happy with the boatyard.
